WIN, the Worldwide Independent Network , has unveiled Independents Day
08: a first, global celebration of independent music, whose works range
from early Elvis and Beatles to newly-liberated Paul McCartney and
Radiohead.
Under the auspices of the WIN, national trade bodies (including AIRCO) and their member labels in territories including USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand and Brazil will for the first time celebrate the sector's unique credentials and collective strength by staging the world's largest ever music auction, releasing a special album - available for just one weekend - and ascertaining the world's all-time favourite independent albums. The sector, which wields a 27.5% share of the global music market (Music & Copyright), will use funds raised to assist the development of independent communities in emerging countries and improve business opportunities between its members, acting as a vertically integrated global network. The auctions will provide a once-in-a-lifetime chance to grab a piece of musical history, with musical rarities, nights out with the band and personal artist collectibles all going under the hammer. Lots include a Thom Yorke signed CD, an ultra-rare Interpol 7" box set, band-signed New Pornographers posters, Chris Slade drum signed sticks (AC/DC), Kim Deal-signed Breeders test pressing and Pixies posters, and a limited-edition Jacknife screen-print signed by Zach Condon aka Beirut. As well as a global online auction, each participating nation will host its own physical event - amounting to, collectively, the largest ever auction of musical memorabilia. The album will bring together the world's leading independent artists, each donating a track to create a totally unique collection of new songs, rarities and live renditions. Only available for purchase over the single weekend of the 4th July, it is widely tipped to become a collector's item. A poll taking place in the run up will provide a definitive list of each participating country's top ten independent albums, with the results played live around the world by partner radio stations. US independents trade body A2IM has already elected to donate 25% of all proceeds it receives to musicians charity MusiCares. Key industry supporters already include Amazon mp3, eMusic, Ioda and Sonicbids. Said Alison Wenham President WIN, Chairman & Chief Executive UK labels body the Association of Independent Music "Independents Day is destined to be one of the most exciting annual events in the musical calendar, and will bring together the world's independent sector under one umbrella. It will be unique and special, a little like the independent sector itself." Commented Peter Gordon, Vice-President WIN, President Thirsty Ear, who originated, developed and is producing the day "Independent music has for too long been a best kept secret. Independents Day will celebrate the artists and professionals who work tirelessly to preserve their local culture and enrich the lives of others. The funds raised will strengthen the global infrastructure of independent music to ensure that the sector continues to punch above its weight and thrive in the future." "MusiCares' mission is inclusive, working to ensure that members of all segments of our music ecosystem have a place to turn in times of need," said Kristen Madsen, Senior Vice-President, MusiCares. "We are grateful for this generous contribution from A2IM that will help us continue to pursue this mission." Independents Day: A United State Of Mind |
