On 28 January the Western Cape Musicians Association launched its first and most important mandate, that of the Benevolent Fund.

 

This fund is in its infancy and like any infant needs to be nurtured if it is to reach its full potential. We ask you the musicians and those who have vested interests in this vital and vibrant industry to assist us in this process.

It is often out of crisis that greatness is borne and this is what the music industry faced in 2005 when Music legendary Robbie Jansen became seriously ill. It was then that the realization of the needs of the musicians became evident as family, friends, fans, promoters, deejays, radio personalities, night club owners and live music venues united to contribute to Mr. Jansen¹s hospital and medical bills.

In 2006 at the first Provincial Musicians Conference, hosted by the Department Cultural Affairs & Sport, an Interim Western Cape Musicians Association (WCMA) was born. Through extensive consultation with role-players from the music industry, a mandate was formulated inclusive of:

1) Establish a Benevolent Fund,
2) Setting up offices in the 5 rural regions
3) Create training programs and
4) Market the Western Cape Province¹s rich culture and talent.

It has been a long journey but the Association is now structurally prepared to fulfill its mandates by achieving not one but two of its mandates in the same week. The launch of the Benevolent Fund as well as the website!

The benevolent fund will be here to assist the members of the association and their families at this stage with funeral cover but we envision the fund to assist with medical cover as well as tertiary education in the future.
