Statement by THE  DEPARTMENT OF ARTS AND CULTURE (DAC) about their involvement with Midem 2007 :

One of the primary functions ot the DAC is to create an enabling environment for South Africa's cultural industries, and as such, the DAC recognizes Music as one of the key sectors.

The DAC acknowledges the growth of the South African music industry in recent years; and sees the opportunities it presents for creative and innovative ways of makink economic gains.

The DAC's commitment to the music industry includes:

    * Promoting and accelerating the growth of this sector
    * Developing closer collaboration within government and associated institutions
    * Expanding local ownership in the Music Industry; and enabling the growth of smaller independent labels
    * Enabling export opportunities
    * Making a major contribution to closing the gap between first and second economies

The DAC's involvement in Midem is one of the ways that the South African music indusstry's participation in the global markets can be increased, and it's international profile elevated.
