The establishment of the music industry sector body, Cape MIC is a culmination of efforts of various local music industry stakeholders who wish to see the Western Cape music industry reach its full potential locally, nationally and in the global arena.
The Western Cape music industry undoubtedly has unique products to offer the country and to the world. New advancements in technology have opened up new distribution opportunities. This in turn, offers a region like the Western Cape the ability to take advantage of global shifts towards the knowledge economy and export -oriented growth that draws on local competencies as a source of competitive advantage. The Western Cape is therefore poised to benefit from this international growth.
On December 6, 2007, the first broad stakeholder meeting was held with industry players to introduce the draft strategy and the notion of setting up a board for this Cape Music Industry Commission, Cape MIC.
The aim of this body is to bring the Western Cape Music fraternity together and be a collective voice to lobby and support the needs of the local industry.
The sector body will encompass all the role-players in the music industry value-chain and the initial establishment will be funded by the Provincial Department of Economic Development & Tourism.
The nomination process for the first elected board of Cape MIC is currently open. Nominations can be received across the value-chain and there is no cost to registration and nomination to the board.
Nominations will remain open until Friday 11 January 2008 and noon.
