RISA is known primarily for the annual South African Music Awards (SAMA's) and a national anti-piracy enforcement unit which is funded entirely by the contributions of RiSA’s members. RISA’s day-to-day work also includes Certification of sales achievement by Record Companies and artists (at present albums sales of 20 000 is gold and 40 000 platinum), representing the recording industry internationally, providing information and research, establishing and applying ethics and standards and lobbying and making representations on key issues affecting the recording industry.

RISA is also the authorised South African agent for ISRC codes, which are freely available to all South African members from RISA
